Tech blog titan Michael Arrington”s next big thing: Hardware.
In addition to advertising, TechCrunch makes money off nearly monthly events that are well attended by Silicon Valley illuminati. The most profitable is the TechCrunch50, which last year featured some 250 startups and early-stage companies pitching to an audience of nearly 2,000, including venture capitalists and corporate buyers. This year’s event is scheduled for September.

TechCrunch has benefited from a tight relationship with entrepreneurs and financiers, and Arrington boasts of scoring some big news scoops, such as MySpace’s recent layoffs.

Arrington ‘understands the inner workings of Silicon Valley, and because he’s been around the valley so long, people trust him and trust his judgment,’ said prolific angel investor Ron Conway, an early Google backer and an adviser to TechCrunch.more

Brilliant Roger Federer shines too bright for Ivo Karlovic

Brilliant Roger Federer shines too bright for Ivo Karlovic.
The Swiss performed miracles while looking as though he was starring in a washing powder advertisement.

What Federer can conjure ought not to surprise anyone, but he jolted the Centre Court crowd as early as the fourth game of the first set in his 6-3, 7-5, 7-6 victory by breaking, with huge panache, the scary Karlovic serve - and no one saw it coming.

The Croat had seemed relaxed and confident and his first service game was spectacular. He opened with an ace, then delivered an unplayable serve, a more or less unplayable serve and finished it all off with a truly unplayable one. The heads bobbed as the thought hit everyone: this was going to be dominated by tie-breaks.

Subway Puts Phelps Back in Its Advertising Pool.
So you heard the one about the world”s fastest swimmer and the bong? Michael Phelps, infamously, admitted to an ill-advised toke at a party and a pictures was shot “round the world last winter that potentially jeopardized millions in sponsorships.

But the swimmer lost only a Kellogg ad deal in the fracas — and that was hardly his biggest paycheck. Meanwhile Visa, Speedo and Subway, among others, stood by him. But Subway distinguished itself as the last major sponsor to say he wasn”t fired. And Mr. Phelps was clearly back-burnered as Subway took him off its unfortunately named FreshBuzz website and delayed his first campaign.

Subway had, after all, scored a major coup in signing the highly coveted endorser in a multiyear restaurant-exclusive deal that executives familiar with the matter say included a number of bidders, including McDonald”s.more

Gian Fulgoni, Where Have You Been?

Gian Fulgoni, Where Have You Been?.
I suggest a different reason for clicks and sales conversions as key metrics in the marketing and advertising industry: they”re objective. Much like:The radar gun that tells the police officer you”ve been driving 20mph over the limit, in response to your opening salvo: ‘…but I was just having a nice, zippy day.’The 7.5 second time in the 40-metre dash that tells the college coaches that your son has zero chance to become a wide receiver at that level, let alone the pros, as opposed to ‘my boy has a big heart — as big as they come!’;The growth in net profit that helps investors decide whether or not to buy Comscore (SCOR) stock; The thermometer and hygrometer that tell your furnace, air conditioner, and dehumidifier/humidifier when to turn on and off;Countless other measures of obvious stuff. If measures of ‘brand lift’ also prove useful, then so be it.more

Hercules Networks” ACMs Now Available to Major Advertising.
ACM”s offer convenience to those on-the go, as well as a highly targeted advertising medium for the major advertisers trying to reach them where they make purchasing decisions. Projecting a growth of more than double its number of screens by 2009, Hercules” CEO Paul King”s initial attraction to Argo”s rVue exchange was it”s simplicity and automated “pay-per-click” approach to DOOH, reminiscent of Google and eBay”s models for the Internet. ‘It”s an incredible challenge to engage an audience for any length of time through advertising, but ACM”s can do just that by providing a 10 minute captive audience while customers wait for their phone, PDA or Ipod to charge,’ said Paul King, CEO of Hercules Networks. ‘The partnership with rVue will dramatically increase our ability to offer a simple and integrated out-of-home solution to advertisers and media planners.’ Last month, Argo launched an enhanced, next generation version of rVue, which connects digital out-of-home networks with a growing list of advertising agencies and media planners looking to reach targeted consumers while they are on-the-go and near the time of purchase.more
